Quick Answer: The Visual InfraRed Thermometer is a handheld non-contact thermometer that measures surface temperature from emitted infrared radiation and combines the reading with a visible camera image, so hot and cold spots can be located on the object. A visual infrared thermometer sits between a single-spot IR gun and a full thermal camera.

Temperature You Can Locate

Every surface above absolute zero emits infrared radiation, and the amount rises steeply with temperature. An infrared thermometer focuses that radiation onto a sensor and converts it to a temperature. A basic model gives one number for one spot; a visual model adds a camera view, often with a coarse heat map blended over it, so the user can see where on a panel, pipe or wall the warm or cold area lies before taking a spot reading.

Two settings affect every reading. Emissivity describes how efficiently a surface radiates: matt, painted and organic surfaces radiate strongly, while polished metal radiates weakly and reads cooler than it really is. The distance-to-spot ratio sets how large an area is averaged at a given distance, so small targets must be measured close up. The emissivity options, spot ratio and temperature range of this model are given in its manual.

Infrared thermometers read only the surface in view. They cannot measure the inside of a liquid or a sealed vessel, and ordinary glass blocks the infrared wavelengths they use, so they read the glass rather than what lies behind it. In building and timber checks, a cold patch found on a wall or floor can point to damp, which is then confirmed on the timber with a wood moisture meter.

Applications

  • Finding overheating terminals, fuses and breakers in electrical panels during maintenance
  • Checking the surface temperature of hot plates, water baths and incubator walls
  • Locating heat loss, missing insulation and cold spots on walls, windows and ducts
  • Physics lessons on thermal radiation and why shiny surfaces read low

Care & Handling

  • If the model has a laser aiming spot, never point it at anyone’s eyes.
  • Keep the lens clean with a soft lens tissue; dust or fingerprints on the lens lower the reading.
  • After moving between a cold room and a warm one, let the instrument settle for several minutes before measuring.
  • Do not use it for body temperature; clinical thermometers are set up and calibrated for that purpose.

Why Choose LabEquip

Facilities teams, electrical and HVAC instructors, and physics departments that teach thermal radiation are the main buyers of this kind of instrument. LabEquip includes it in the General Lab Products range; ask about its range and imaging details through the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does shiny metal read colder than it is?

Polished metal has low emissivity, so it emits little infrared radiation and reflects its surroundings instead. Set the correct emissivity if the model allows it, or put a piece of matt tape on the surface and measure the tape.

Can it measure the temperature of water in a beaker?

It measures only the water surface, and evaporation keeps the surface slightly cooler than the bulk. It cannot read through the glass wall. For the temperature of a liquid, use a probe or liquid-in-glass thermometer immersed in it.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It is the distance from the target divided by the diameter of the area measured. With a ratio of 12 to 1, for instance, the thermometer averages a 1 cm spot at 12 cm away. If the spot is larger than the target, the reading includes the background.

How is it different from a thermal imaging camera?

A thermal camera measures temperature at every pixel of its image. A visual infrared thermometer combines a spot or coarse area reading with a visible photo, which helps locate problems but gives much less temperature detail across the scene.

Can it measure body temperature?

It is not designed for that. Body temperature devices are set up for skin emissivity and a fixed measuring distance and are calibrated for medical use. Use a clinical thermometer for people.

Why does the reading change when I move closer?

Moving closer shrinks the measured spot. From far away the spot may take in cooler or warmer surroundings; close up it covers only the target. Measure from a distance at which the spot sits fully inside the area you care about.
