The Jack Plane (standardized as a 4 or 5 size) is used to flatten, square, and smooth the surfaces and edges of wooden workpieces. It consists of a heavy-duty cast iron body with a precision-ground base (sole) and sides. The internal high-carbon steel blade (iron) is held at a fixed angle by the “frog” assembly, allowing the user to shave off consistent layers of wood. Its length provides the necessary “bridge” to level out high spots on uneven boards, making it the most useful all-purpose plane in a student’s toolkit.
